Two new faces will be facing the audience next Tuesday when the Planning Commission meets for the first time in 1979. After the city council voted Monday, Tim Hunter, an 11-year resident of Manteca, and Alfonso Duran, a 52-year resident, were selected to sit on the commission.

Manteca Unified School District's unsettled situation over the past year has caused some concern and wonder about what the educational picture will be throughout the new year. The school district's recently resigned superintendent, John Wilber, will continue to lead the educational vessel through June 30.

At yesterday's breakfast meeting, PGE district manager John Iribarren was elected president of the Manteca District Chamber of Commerce. A new president was elected with John Burnett, city attorney; Ted Poulos, druggist; and John Gatto, Bank of America, re-elected treasurer.

Henry Hubbard from Manteca was elected daytime policeman following a turnout of 16 candidates. A council committee had interviewed the candidates personally last week and had recommended his hiring Monday night.

January 8, 1939

 

Mario DePaoli was awarded a contract to haul the garbage collected by the city, which was prepared by City Attorney J. R. Scott and read at the city council meeting Tuesday. The contract runs for 10 years and became effective on October 3. A contract grants DiPaoli exclusive rights to collect garbage within the city.

Levee construction prospects for the land lying north of the Stanislaus River, south of Manteca, against flood waters look exceedingly bright, according to a report made by E. C. Woodruff and Guss Schmiedt at a meeting of the directors of the Manteca local chamber of commerce Tuesday night. In a previous meeting, President Powers appointed E.C. Woodruff, W.J. Woodward and E.E. Douglass to assist in any way he can.

 

Because of rapid spread of the flu, the city trustees have taken drastic measures to put an end to the problem. Mayor J. R. Scott prepared and passed an ordinance at the Monday night meeting of the City Council. All church meetings, lodges, pool rooms and public gatherings must be approved by the city's medical board and approved by its physicians.
